Do the proposed cuts to Auckland City services go too far?
$$$$$$$Â cut cut cut
“The Auckland City Council is looking to cut hundreds of millions in spending over the next 10 years on core services such as footpaths, public transport and stormwater to hold rates to inflation.
Even modest programmes such as water quality testing at Waiheke Island’s swimming beaches from next summer and installing training lights on sports fields will be hit.
Council officers have issued details of the first proposed spending cuts that form the basis of a new 10-year budget.”

Lift off at Warren and Mahoney

Flag Attack
The end of last week saw a surge of new flags added to the Jasmax board – in anticipation of Warren and Mahoney joining the project that week perhaps?! It’s interesting to note that the vast majority are concentrated in the central city – does everyone at Jasmax really live within 3kms of the center?? Surely there are things around your local neighborhood that are worthy of attention? And I’m sure the north shore is not THAT perfect!
bicycle lanes!
So it turns out that one of the most popular flag posts have been on the topic of transport. Furthermore, most of these transportation issues are focused around bicycles.
Here’s a clip of people commuting to the city in Denmark Copenhagen. Apparently they have something called the ‘Green Wave’ put in place. It’s basically a lane for bicycles and ‘if you cycle at 20 km/h the lights are timed so that you’ll hit green all the way into the city center.’ _ http://www.copenhagenize.com
Do you think that something like this could work in Auckland?
Post your response!

Inspired by Roope Mokka’s article in Monocle (issue 15) on Helsinki 2.0, we are developing a similar idea for Auckland City, New Zealand. The ‘Analogue Series’ is the physical precursor to a web-based interface that will allow people of Auckland City to place needs, desires, and ideas onto a map of the city. Combining the open source approach of wikipedia, with the personal interaction of social networking (facebook) and online trading sites, our project aims to empower people to voice their concerns by providing the potential for their views to be reinforced and realised through critical mass.
Ultimately, our aim for this project is to define the future values of Auckland City, and to consider the ways in which this can inform the design of our built environment.

Can we “open up the creation of cities in the same way we have opened up the compiling of encyclopedias?”
